130Democracy means to rule by the people.The word comes from two Greek words: demos (people) and kratos (power). It means that the people should choose their leaders and have a say in how the country runs.Ancient Greece was the birthplace of democracy. The first known democracy started in Athens, Greece, around 500 BCE. Only men could vote back then, and they used pebbles to vote!There are two main types: direct democracy, where people vote on everything themselves, and representative democracy, where they elect leaders to make decisions for them. Many countries have democratic systems where people vote to choose their leaders.
